A törökszentmiklósi Bethlen Gábor Református Általános Iskola, Óvoda

In the second half of the 1980s schools were enabled to seek the new ways of gifted education.

Hungary’s first modern elementary school complex program for developing talented students was born in Törökszentmiklós in Bethlen Street Primary School. The realization of the program started in 1987 and soon many followers adopted it.

The teaching staff developed a draft which launched tentatively with the assistance of the Department of Educational Psychology of Lajos Kossuth University. Thanks to this working relationship the school could latch on to several scientific research about gifted education. Since 1988 the institution has been the member of ECHA, and as a presenter has taken part at each conference organized so far. Personality development was always an emphasized area. The program is based on continuous development adapting to the results of the latest research and social, educational, labour market challenges. Dr. László Balogh, Professor and his colleagues, as well as University of Debrecen provide support for this process.

In recognition of the work of the school it was the first primary school in Hungary which became a member of a national cooperation the so-called „Talentspot” founded by the Hungarian Association for Talent Development. Some „good practice” was also transmitted to other schools.

Insurance references were given by Prof. Dr. f. j. Mönks President of ECHA.

The program also has been recognized by professionals in foreign countries, a lot of publications have been published (available at URwww.bethleng.hu), several successful international (organized by European Council for High Ability) and national conferences were held at the school.

The students’ outstanding competition, secondary school and higher education results show the efficiency of the program. Follow-up studies of the pupils having taken part in the complex development program were made in 2004 and in 2012.

The success of the project is provided by the teaching staff’s professional capacity: 6 teachers graduated at the University of Debrecen as an expert on gifted education and also got the ECHA'S diploma. Other members of the teaching staff participated in a 60-120-hour training.

The mission of this complex program is to provide equal access, continuity, career tracking, talent search, monitoring, talent identification and improvements for every child living in the underprivileged region of Törökszentmiklós and its neighbouring areas. As a result of this project children can study in appropriate areas and later they can meet the requirements on the labour market (e.g. lifelong learning).

The purpose of the talent management is to develop and monitor the students’ individual abilities, skills, motivation and attitude in a complex, eight- year long system systematically.

Stages of the talent development:

-3-7 years: Complex, 3-4 year long process (based on a two-year observation of the child) developing  individual abilities, skills, motivation and attitude.

--7-8 years: It is called the introductory section in which the most important elements are the followings:  to establish basic skills; to ensure motivational tools; to configure sense of security, self-sufficiency, to set of rules.

-9-10. year: The primer section: to learn the basic skills; to pay attention to talented students; to offer different facilities that can help the students to get into the program and to create the teacher’s pedagogical opinion; to provide method and opportunity for students to gain experience in several specific areas on their own.

-10-12. year: The talent identification: to identify students’ strengths, weaknesses; to make development plans; to develop children individually.

12-15 years: Classic talent management: to develop students’ strong areas; to strengthen the weak areas; develop personality.

The school’s module system ensures the special ability- and skill development. The students in the 10 to 15-year-old section have 12 compulsory modules,16 optional compulsory modules and 16 optional modules.
